Delbert Rupp

Delbert Rupp is not a typical ceramist. After, taking some night classes in ceramics, he quickly discovered that he not only loved wheel throwing, but that he was good at it. He was quickly bored by production pottery and so moved into producing unique, one-of-a-kind works. He developed his own method of throwing, then manipulating clay into an organic form. In his large sculptural pieces, Delbert strives to create a perfect balance between negative and positive space as well as a rhythmic movement and grace.

“I like the challenge of making something out of nothing. I enjoy using a given space and doing what the clay tells me it wants to do. I like that I can have a vision but not total control. Even when I do a series of similar shapes, the clay sometimes wants to do its own thing. It’s a partnership.”

Delbert Rupp is a Artist in Residence at The Artistry and a Full Member of All Fired Up! Ceramic Art Center. He does numerous demonstrations for the public and is a teacher and mentor to those ceramist that know him and get the pleasure to meet him.
