Emotional Landscapes & The Aviary of Mood
New Work by Caitlin Schwerin & Delbert Rupp.
Don't Miss the Closing Reception: Saturday, June 26th from 1-4
We will be hosting a closing party on Saturday, June 26th from 1-4. Caitlin Schwerin will be here again, so don’t miss this opportunity to see her before she heads back to Portland and transitions into a new chapter of her life. We will have snacks, drinks, and some surprise raffles. Also, our studio mates, All Fired Up! Ceramic Art Center, will have pottery available to paint, so bring the family and make a day out of it!
Yes, you heard correctly… Caitlin is Back! She is driving from Portland to Chico for one more show and she is sharing the space with The Artistry’s Artist in Residence, Delbert Rupp and his large-scale, ceramic pots and organic sculptures.
Caitlin is well known for her whimsical painting style where she uses acrylics on canvas with a (icing-like) gesso underlay and a glossy varnish over coat. This show will cover a variety of subjects including: landscapes, trees, and birds. However, like her moods, her subject matter changes. Most of her “life moments” are captured in text, in a story that accompanies a painting, or in some other transparent way that allows it to be told without telling it.
After being titled “One of Chico’s most recognizable artists” by Jason Cassidy of the Chico News and Review in March of 2009, Caitlin made the hard choice to move to Portland where she now resides. Currently, Caitlin has had to make another hard choice. “Portland has been awesome, although I haven't seen as much of it as I would like to. I've spent the majority of time at the drawing table. This summer I will be hanging up my paint-speckled apron in exchange for a life behind a desk, or a spade or somewhere other than my studio. At long last, after painting every day, I got a nasty case of tendonitis which is making my decision for me. It's time for a change.”
Joining her in The Artistry’s large, warehouse style space will be ceramist Delbert Rupp whose giant pots and rhythmic organic sculpture has captured the eye of artists and art connoisseurs alike. His method is like no other. “I throw forms using six to fourteen pounds of clay for each shape. The size of the form dictates what I can then do with it.” He then joins, manipulates, paddles, scrapes and adds to the clay to create sculpture maintaining a balanced negative and positive spatial structure as well as a strong sense of movement and grace that the eye is able to dance across.
The Artistry invites the public to join in our celebration of two artists, one at the end of a soul enriching career, the other a master of form, both holding the heart of Chico. The Reception will be held on Saturday, May 22nd, from 5-8. As always, food, drink, and good company will be provided. Free to the public. |
